Health System Success Strategies Under Alternative Payment Models

Bruce A. Johnson, Shareholder, Polsinelli PC, Denver, CO
Michael D. Robertson, MD, CMO, Covenant Health Partners/Covenant ACO, Lubbock, TX

Policy changes implemented through the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) are designed to promote the growth of alternative payment models (APMs) that more closely align Medicare fee for service payments with quality, cost and other “value-based” variables.  Given MACRA’s emphasis on value-based care and APMs, health care organizations that fail to position for success may suffer financially.

This webinar will provide perspective on health system strategic actions to succeed under MACRA and its emphasis on APMs.  Using a case study format drawing on the experiences of Covenant Health System in Lubbock, Texas, the program will review a range of clinical, organizational, operational, financial, strategic and other considerations to promote success.  Key topics will include changing financial incentives; clinical care model evolution;  APM strategic, operational and financial considerations; the potential use of innovative organizational, provider compensation and funds flow structures and other considerations.  Attention will also be paid to the Trump administration’s efforts to provide regulatory relief and statutory timelines to migrate to shared financial risk as a means to reign in health care costs.
